This new Sunbears! album is really cool. It’s called You Will Live Forever, and was produced by the talented Jeremy Griffith. Kind of a sixties vibe in all the best ways. Certainly one of the more unique and compelling records to come out recently. If you click on the photo, you can listen to the whole thing!
Yeah. I heard this album when it was featured as a First Listen preview on NPR.org. The video is alright and all, but the album is really great. I totally get it if you don’t like it, but you should at least give it a chance. The band (really just one woman) is tUnE-YarDs, and the album is W H O K I L L. No idea what possessed her to write her name or album title that way, but whatever.
I have really been enjoying this album. I had no idea until about a week ago, but Hope Sandoval has had a band for the past several years called Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions. This album is called Through the Devil Softly. Very quiet and haunting, as I would expect. Fascinating lyrics as well.
*In case you do not know, Hope Sandoval was the singer for Mazzy Star, who you might know for their song, “Fade Into You.”

So, Holcombe Waller, who’s previous album, Troubled Times, is one of my favorites, has released a new album, which seems just as good as the first. After my first listen, I think my favorite track will be “Qu’Appelle Valley, Saskatchewan.” Anyhow, give it a listen.
The Witmark Demos 1962-1964 is streaming on npr.org until October 19th. This has already replaced John Wesley Harding as my favorite collection of Dylan songs for several reasons. One, the recordings are beautiful. The tones of the instruments and his voice are just right; as far as my ears are concerned, some of these recordings are much better than the ones that made it onto the actual albums. Two, Dylan’s performance is the best it ever was. Apparently, the demos were done in a small studio so that the songs could be put down on paper for other musicians to learn before the actual albums were recorded. Dylan sounds very relaxed and comfortable compared to many of his other recordings. On several of the songs, he plays piano instead of guitar, which is a nice change sometimes. Three, Dylan recorded all of these songs before he turned twenty-four. I am twenty three right now, and I cannot imagine writing songs this good at this point in life. Maybe by the time I am forty I will write a song like “Spanish Boots of Spanish Leather,” but probably not.
Anyhow, if you like Bob Dylan, you will want to check this out.
My brother-in-law and bandmate, Ben, created this cool lo-fi album. I really like it. I like the sounds and the texture of the sounds, and I like how he makes you work to hear what he is saying in the songs. Good music doesn’t tell you everything the first time you listen; it reveals itself bit by bit over time. Check it out.
So, on the new Robert Plant album, Band of Joy, he covers two Low songs. The songs are Silver Rider and Monkey. I really like the Silver Rider cover, but the Monkey cover is only so-so, in my opinion; then again, I’ve never been too huge on that song anyhow. The album is streaming on npr.org until Sept. 14. Kimbra - Settle Down
This lovely siren comes to us from the land of the Koala.

I actually saw her play at a tiny outdoor concert in Matamata, New Zealand in 2007. She was just doing solo acoustic stuff at the time; it was the most powerful performance I had ever seen.
This is totally cool.
Innocence Mission — Bright as Yellow. One of my favorite bands ever.
