The Singer Called You Babylon
But you are Rome Same-thinking individual minds Who do not protest, but bend To the whims of the throne Like wet grass   Who cheer the lion Toss him the starving bodies Of foreigners, slaves, and believers And stroke the pungent crust Of his knotted mane Ignoring the worms Crawling from limbs and torsos He was too bloated to eat To the tender, skinless place Where you shackle his neck To...

excerpt:
He was not conscious of it at the time, but this was not the life he wanted to live.  In fact, it was barely a life at all.  It was more a collection of repeating cycles and habits, kept in motion by various chemical and hormonal dependencies.  For the third time, he read the unpronounceable words on the box his food came in.  He liked the idea that no person had ever touched his food, or even...

Turning Music Into Food
Last night I had a dream that I was using a computer program that could create a recipe from a song.  Basically, you would load a song into the program, and it would identify all the instruments, textures, and dynamics of the song, and then create a recipe that corresponded to these things.  The crazy thing was that when I or anyone else ate food that came from these recipes, we knew immediately...

Newsweek and The Atlantic, shame on you.
newsweek: wardrox: How far removed from the real world do you have to be to think publishing, with no warning, a graphic image of a dead or dieing dying person covered in blood is fine? Newsweek’s Tumblr even calls the posting of the grotesque image “a necessity in an age of media-driven rumors”. No, Newsweek, it fucking isn’t. Unless you think your readers are knuckle dragging,...

There is a woman who tastes like the sun
you lick your lips driving home from her father’s house and you know if you could have her your body would be truthful and all the terrible things that followed your birth would be negated— even the flaw you will not admit is always on your mind

Warrior
You sharpen the tip of spear with your teeth, while your wife plows the ground with jawbone of an ox. She is a great, black fire.   The old blood is drifting up your throat and the witch-men sing all night of melon-breasted women in rival villages, but the spear is wilting in your hands.   When you are standing in the river, you grab a fish, tear its flesh open with your teeth, and...

Wovenhand is easily one of my favorite bands.  Some sort of German website did a fantastic job of video taping an entire Wovenhand concert in an old church.  The video is over an hour long, but I thought it was well worth my time.  Just click on the link to see the video.

Music I Like: Holcombe Waller
So, Holcombe Waller, who’s previous album, Troubled Times, is one of my favorites, has released a new album, which seems just as good as the first.  After my first listen, I think my favorite track will be “Qu’Appelle Valley, Saskatchewan.”  Anyhow, give it a listen.

I built a guitar!
I made this guitar from a kit.  It came out surprisingly well, considering I had very little spare time to work on it, no experience, and it was a really cheap kit.   A close up on the headstock.  Shaping this was one of the hardest parts.   Close up of the body.  Nothing especially tricky here, just lots of sanding.  I decided to go with a matte finish and sand through the paint in a few...

The Witmark Demos 1962-1964 is streaming on npr.org until October 19th.  This has already replaced John Wesley Harding as my favorite collection of Dylan songs for several reasons.  One, the recordings are beautiful.  The tones of the instruments and his voice are just right; as far as my ears are concerned, some of these recordings are much better than the ones that made it onto the actual...

My brother-in-law and bandmate, Ben, created this cool lo-fi album.  I really like it.  I like the sounds and the texture of the sounds, and I like how he makes you work to hear what he is saying in the songs.  Good music doesn’t tell you everything the first time you listen; it reveals itself bit by bit over time.  Check it out.

Hey, everybody. As you may or may not know, I am in a band called Over the Ocean. Today is the official release date of our album, Paper House. Robert Plant covers two Low songs
So, on the new Robert Plant album, Band of Joy, he covers two Low songs.  The songs are Silver Rider and Monkey.  I really like the Silver Rider cover, but the Monkey cover is only so-so, in my opinion; then again, I’ve never been too huge on that song anyhow.  The album is streaming on npr.org until Sept. 14.  You can hear it...
